From cheering on rioters who burnt down Minneapolis in 2020 to letting criminals out early, Minnesota Democrats with the support of Moorhead-area State Senator Rob Kupec have passed a series of anti-police, pro-crime laws (SF 2909 & HF 5216). New laws Democrats passed under single party control of state government with the help of Rob Kupec include:
· Early release from prison.
· Shorter probation for offenders.
· Retroactive sentence reductions.
· Sealed criminal records from the public.
· Reduced penalties for crimes.
· Weakened drug enforcement.
· More limits on police searches.
· New breaks for murder accomplices.
· No life without parole for teenage murderers.
· Less accountability for criminals — more restrictions on police.
Weatherman Rob Kupec took the Democrat pro-crime stance to the extreme when he voted for and passed a bill in 2023 (HF 2497) that forced school resource officers out of Minnesota schools. As a result of heavy restrictions placed on school resource officers by Rob Kupec and his Democrat colleagues, officers were removed shortly before the start of the school year from schools across Minnesota, including Rob Kupec’s own district in Moorhead and across Clay County.
Backlash against the laws passed by Rob Kupec and his Democrat allies was swift. Republicans and law enforcement organizations quickly called for a special session to reconvene the legislature to fix the law and get resource officers back in school for the 2023-2024 school year. However, Rob Kupec and his fellow Democrats didn’t think it was important and no special session occurred.
In the wake of the Moorhead School District Superintendent calling for a quick resolution from state leaders, and Moorhead Police Chief Shannon Monroe stating the new law “renders our SROs useless” ahead of the 2023-2024 school year, Minnesotans waited to see if Democrats would agree to a special session.
Rob Kupec, who has zero experience in law enforcement, stubbornly told local media that the police didn’t understand the new law and ignored the calls for a special session to immediately get officers back in schools. Kicking the can down the road left our students without security.
By the time Rob got around to voting for a fix in Spring of 2024, school resource officers had been absent from Moorhead and other Clay County schools for an entire school year. By the time officers were able to return to Moorhead schools, they had been missing for two school years.
If Clay County residents want to keep police officers on their streets and in their schools working to keep the public safe, they need Rob Kupec out of the Capitol.
