A Detroit Lakes resident's life changed forever when Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell—now a convicted felon—broke into her home by prying open a basement window with a crowbar in an apparent attempted robbery. Mitchell was arrested at the scene, yet despite Republicans' calls for her immediate resignation and video evidence of the break-in, she refused to step down from the Minnesota Senate.
Mitchell didn’t manage to stay in office alone. She had the backing of her friend and Moorhead area State Senator Rob Kupec to thank for helping her survive several votes to expel her from the Senate.

When Rob Kupec’s constituent, someone he is obligated to serve as their Senator, needed his help to make Nicole Mitchell face immediate accountability, he sided with his friend and fellow politician instead. On SIX separate occasions, Rob Kupec voted to protect Mitchell from expulsion, prohibiting her from voting, or even requesting her resignation following her crime.

1. April 24, 2024: Rob Kupec votes against a motion to start due-process proceedings “to consider expelling Senator Nicole Mitchell.” (State of Minnesota, Journal of the Senate, Senate.MN.gov, p. 14824, 4/24/24)
2. April 29, 2024: Rob Kupec votes to rule a motion out of order that would prohibit legislators charged with a crime of violence from voting on bills. (State of Minnesota, Journal of the Senate, Senate.MN.gov, p. 15560, 4/29/24)
3. April 29, 2024: Rob Kupec votes to rule a motion out of order that would prohibit the Secretary of the Senate from recording the votes of legislators charged with a crime of violence. (State of Minnesota, Journal of the Senate, Senate.MN.gov, p. 15561, 4/29/24)
Not only did Rob Kupec undermine the integrity of the Minnesota Legislature by protecting a criminal that victimized the community he represents, he allowed that same criminal to help him cast the deciding votes needed to pass their hyper-partisan agenda.
Rob Kupec enabled Nicole Mitchell to continue sitting in the Legislature voting on key issues regarding public safety, criminal justice, and more for over a year following her crime. Mitchell resigned after being convicted of felony burglary and sentenced to 180 days in jail.
Rob Kupec can’t be trusted to combat crime in Minnesota. He sides with criminal politicians over his own community.
