In 2023, Minnesotans were shocked to see that the Minnesota Department of Corrections announced a radical new transgender policy. They started by transferring their first male prisoner to the state’s only all-female prison in Shakopee. Along with being placed in his preferred prison around women, the state began the process of allowing him to receive taxpayer funded gender altering surgeries while in prison.

In 2025, Republicans tried to end this insane practice. They attempted to clarify that while the Department of Corrections is responsible for providing health care to inmates, they don’t have to provide “gender-affirming care” which includes sex change surgeries.
The attempt was voted down by the Democrat majority with all 34 Senate Democrats voting to block the effort and all 33 Republicans voting to advance it. Grant Hauschild casted the deciding vote preventing the effort from advancing.
It should be no surprise that Grant Hauschild defended taxpayer-funded transgender surgeries for prisoners. He has built up a strong record during his short tenure in office of supporting the craziest, woke transgender policies from the left-wing. In his first term, he has also voted to:
Mandate all health plans to cover transgender surgeries, puberty blockers, and hormones. Even if the patient is a minor
Block protecting female athletes from boys competing in girls’ sports
Make Minnesota a “transgender refuge” where children can receive gender altering surgeries without parental consent or even notification.
Grant Hauschild is for They/Them, not the Northland.
